Westcott | Lace Shawl Knitting Pattern
Description The Fond mittens are an ideal starter project for knitters aspiring to knit fingered gloves one day. You’ll be introduced to thumb gusset shaping whilst in the safe cocoon of a garter and rib texture, which is a beautifully elastic and fit-friendly fabric. The stitch texture also provides excellent grip and comfort on cold days. Only two skeins of yarn are needed to knit this textured mitten knitting pattern, and you can stashbust by using a different colour for the cabled trim. Four sizes are provided, which will fit palm circumferences 15 (18, 21, 24) cm [6 (7, 8¼, 9½) in]. Construction of the Fond mittens The Fond mittens start with a strip of cable edging that forms the cuff. Next, stitches are picked up and knitted along the row-end edges of this strip. The rest of the cuff is worked in a cable and rib basket weave pattern. Increases are worked to create a thumb gusset in order to shape the hand. After this, the hand stitches are left on a holder while the thumb is worked in garter stitch with stocking stitch ribs. The hand is then completed in broken rib and cable basket weave pattern, before the mitten is seamed together. The second mitten is worked in the same way, with mirrored patterning. However, any Aran yarn with a stocking stitch/stockingette tension of 18 sts x 24 rows to 10cm will be an excellent substitute.
